FAQs
Will it hurt?
Yup! It’s still a tattoo. But it it definitely less painful than a piercing, and they don’t hurt as much afterwards either.
Handpoke is typically a gentler sensation, even if it is more time consuming. Everyone is different, but typically the inner ear is less painful than the outer ear.
Can you do colour tattoos on ears?
Yep! Colours are totally good for ear tattoos, though generally colour inks are less predictable in their longevity than black and gray.
How well do they last?
Pretty well! Like any tattoo, there is always some fading and changing over time. Handpoke tends to deepen in tone and settle with consistency, which is why I prefer it for tricky and complicated ares like ears. As always, aftercare matters, so keep it hydrated and reduce friction as it heals. Also touch ups are always free! I just recommend waiting at least 4 months to let things settle
How is the healing?
Healing is not particularly different than any other tattoo. I don’t put second skin or any other fancy bandage on the area, so we just layer on some vaseline before sending you on your way, which you can wash off before you get home. The only special things for healing ear tattoos are to use a fresh pillowcase when you sleep after, and to not wear earbuds/headphones that press into the tattooed area during healing. Otherwise, make sure to keep the area clean, moisturized, and apply sunscreen *after* it is healed. Handpoked ear tattoos are typically healed in 10-14 days.
Do I have to take out my piercings?
It’s preferred if you can remove jewelry for the process, though it is not always necessary. I have supplies for removing, cleaning, and storing ear jewelry during the tattoo process if you have difficulty removing things at home. Please note that due to normal swelling after a tattoo, I wouldn’t recommend putting your jewelry back into your ears until the next morning. As such, I only tattoo near piercings that are completely healed. Besides the technical things, I *love* creating an ear tattoo composition that works to cleverly compliment your piercings 🙂
Do I have to get a matching set?
Nope! we can do one ear, matching, or asymmetrical pieces if you prefer.
Can you do cover-up ear tattoos?
Yes! If you have previously had an ear tattoo that you are unhappy with, we can design a cover up to conceal previous work.
